Did you know there is actually a difference between Mahjong (also spelled mahjongg, mah-jong, or mah-jongg) and Mahjong Solitaire? Mahjong is actually a 4 player game involving skill, strategy, calculation, and luck; while Mahjong solitaire is a tile matching, single player game.

‘Mah-jong’ can be translated from Chinese as ‘clattering sparrow’, ‘flax sparrow’ or possibly as ‘hemp bird’. The tiles when shuffled make a melodious noise reminiscent of the noise of numerous sparrows squabbling over scattered food crumbs.

Since many of us are addicted to this little game, I thought I’d put it up here in case we are ever away from our computer but have access to an Internet connection that way we can hustle on over here and get a fix! (Get to it already!)
How to Play

The goal is to clear the board by removing all the tiles from the layout. Layouts can differ in pattern, size and height. There exist hundreds of different layouts. You must remove the tiles in pairs. A pair consists of two tiles which both are a) “free” and b) identical (or of the same type).

A tile is “free” when:
no other tile is lying above or is partially covering it
no other tile is lying to the left or to the right of it

Two tiles are identical if they look exactly the same (of course…). An exception to this are the Flowers and Seasons tiles. They are non-identical matching tiles and belong to the same type. All the Flowers tiles match one another and all the Season tiles match one another. You should study them before starting a game.

Each tile appears four times in a standard solitaire mahjongg game. Again an exception for the Flowers and Seasons tiles who appear only once each during a game.

It’s not as easy as it sounds; you can end up with having matched the “wrong” pairs and you may find yourself stuck, with unmatchable tiles blocking other key tiles so you can’t clear the layout. You must be careful before removing a pair, you should look for where the remaining pair is in the layout and plan ahead. If all four of an identical tile are free, remove them to ‘unclutter’ the field. It’s not only a game of pure luck, you have to play strategic.
Strategy

Remember that there are four of each tile. When removing a pair, an identical pair exists in the layout. Is it trapped by your removal of the first pair?
Concentrate your efforts on long rows and tall stacks.
Plan ahead as many moves as you can.
If all four of a tile are available, remove them all to unclutter the field.
Identify as many matching pairs as possible. Check for tiles that need to be unblocked.
Beware of triples (three matching free tiles); choose carefully which pair you remove. Leave the one that’s blocking the least important tiles.
Concentrate on removing pairs that will unblock the most tiles.

Hoy  21  de  Junio, como todos los años ocurre el solsticio de verano, el "día" mas largo del año. La tierra alcanza su  mayor declinación (23°27' norte)  sobre su eje, lo cual provoca que los rayos de  sol  incidan  con mayor amplitud en el hemisferio norte y extienda el tiempo que dura la fase de luz en la tierra. Durante esta fecha el sol se encuentra  en  el  punto mas  alto sobre el "ecuador celeste". 
  Nosotros (Venezuela) vivimos en el hemisferio norte, este es el día en que veremos al  sol  mas  alto en el cielo y tendrá el día mas largo del año  En esta fecha, los habitantes de la región septentrional  del planeta se aprestan para  presenciar  uno de los espectáculos más bellos de la naturaleza: el sol de media noche.

La  celebración  del  solsticio  de  verano, es tan antigua como la misma humanidad. En un principio se creía que el sol no volvería a su esplendor total, pues después de esta fecha, los días era cada vez más cortos.
De acuerdo con el astrónomo barranquillero Jorge Enrique Senior, se puede decir  que  todo  empezó  hace  cerca  de  5 mil años, cuando en nuestros antepasados,  tan  amigos  de   observar   las estrellas y establecer  su influencia  en  nuestras vidas, se dieron cuenta que en determinada época del  año  el  Sol  se  mueve   desde  una posición perpendicular sobre el Trópico de Capricornio, hasta una posición perpendicular sobre el trópico de Cáncer.

A  estos  días extremos en la posición del Sol se les llamó solsticios de invierno  y  verano,  los cuales ocurren los días diciembre 21 y junio 21 respectivamente.  Estas  fechas corresponden al hemisferio norte, pues en el sur es al contrario.

Otra  manera  de  visualizarlo es  imaginarse que paseamos todos los días por la playa al atardecer. El día que lo veremos al sol  ponerse más  al sur  es  el  21  de  diciembre  (Solsticio  de  invierno  lo llaman en el hemisferio norte)  y el día que lo veremos más al norte es el 21 de  junio  (solsticio  de verano, para el hemisferio norte, pues para los del sur sería de invierno).

Hablando  propiamente del solsticio de verano, en esta fecha el eje de la tierra está inclinado 23,27 grados hacia el sol. Esto  ocasiona que, en el hemisferio norte, el 21 de junio sea el día más largo  del  año,  pero   esto no es válido para cualquier región, pues en países como Venezuela, que está más al Sur de los 23,27 grados de latitud norte, la diferencia no es tan notable.

Este  descubrimiento permitió al ser humano medir exactamente 1 año y así crear  el  calendario  solar, predecir con exactitud las estaciones, con todo  lo  que  eso  significa  para la agricultura y, en general, para la civilización.  Para visualizar esos días se construyeron obras o señales,  a veces monumentales, como Stonehenge en Inglaterra
                                                       
Stonehenge  es uno de los más famosos monumentos prehistóricos del mundo.
Aunque no se sabe muy bien su fecha de construcción,  los científico estima que ésta ocurrió cerca al año 2800 A.C.

Precisamente,  al amanecer del día más largo del año, el sol que sale por el horizonte queda perfectamente encuadrado entre las aberturas de los megalitos.

Sin   embargo,   algunos   científicos   consideran   que  esto  es  pura coincidencia, pues desde hace 5 mil años hasta hoy el eje de la Tierra ha sufrido modificaciones, lo que lleva a suponer que en el tiempo en que fue construido Stonehenge el sol no quedaba  "atrapado"  entre las  separaciones de las grandes piedras que conforman este monumento.

Nosotros  los  Marinos,  escogimos este día  como fecha de celebración a nuestras  faenas  diarias en la mar el cual fue nuestro primer amor y al cual dedicamos nuestra vida entera:

21 de Junio Día de la Marina Mercante Venezolana.
